Giant Driftwood Karamea River

Sunset on Scotts Beach, start of the Heaphy Track

Rongo Backpackers & Gallery, Karamea

We are situated in Karamea, in the sub-tropical far north west coast, a small community isolated from the rest of New Zealand by the mountains of Kahurangi National Park, the only road connection being the spectacular scenic drive over Karamea Bluff from Westport.

Karamea is the start (or finish!) of several popular tramping/hiking trails in the mountains and forests of the Kahurangi, such as the Heaphy Track, Wangapeka and Leslie-Karamea tracks.

Spectacular mountain and coastal scenery and recent improvements in access to the internationally significant Oparara Basin draw an increasing number of visitors to the area, as does the relaxed atmosphere and mild micro-climate, making Karamea the perfect place to get away from the crowds and have a real West Coast adventure.

What is there to do in Karamea?

At Rongo every fourth night is free, because we want to encourage people to stay in the area for more than just one night and get a chance to see some of the local attractions. Fishing In the Rainforest Mt Stormy Summit

On the way to Karamea from Westport are a number of worthwhile attractions, so leave some time for the journey up.
